Bloomfield Iowa April 18th 1858. Dear Clara:- Inclosed please find a ring which I wish you to keep and wear as a pledge of love. And, in as much as I cannot be present to place it on your finger, I desire you to do so, and to kiss it for me. This ring is said to be pure gold. If this is so, it will become brighter by usuage, and the longer it is worn, the greater will be the evidence of its purity. I need not make the application, for you will readily perceive my meaning. This is Sabbath. O how much I would like to spend this day in your company. But so it is. Twenty five long miles seperate us, and I can only wish it were otherwise. But it will not always
