Monday 5/3/43 My dearest: I got your Friday letter this noon before lunch. I was terribly sorry to hear about Sis. It's a good thing your mother went at once. I can't imagine anything more pitiful than a little child praying for her mother to be spared. Even a far away disinterested God could hardly refuse. It trys one's faith most severely when things like this happen. I was under the impression that your folks were planning to take both children, not just Patty. It would be a shame to separate them. Oh damm why do we have to have this cursed war on. We could be able to offer a good home but
