Sat. a.m. 7/8/43 Dearest: The big surprise of last evening was the totally unexpected appearance of Ralph Babcock! (And half-a-dozen exclaimed "Now, if only B.J. were to walk in!") He has a 15-day furlough (and is going to spend five of them with his wife whom he left down in Texas. He said they talked it over and figured they couldn't both afford the trip, so I think it was pretty nice of her) and is going on to either Cleveland or New Jersey and print a paper. Clyde and I had a comfortable, pleasant trip; but those who came by train had to stand all the way! We got in about 3:00 and quite a hunk of mail awaited. I'd forgotten to say anything to you about addressing me here. They were mostly greetings. Alma and I have a marvelous room. The price on the door says $11.00, but our reservation was for $5.50.
