astonishment. It is impossible to imagine how these people could sleep with indirectly aired beds. The lady who explained her house to us said her two children slept under the bed. A door below proved that the almost impossible probably was true, but we didn't examine the where-abouts very closely. Of course, you must understand that these people are not the usual thing in Holland. They have maintained tiny colonies of traditions and original customs and are therefore the unusual. It seems queer that they should adhere so closely to old customs in a modern European world. And always we find the canals wherever we go - be it the islands or the mainland of Holland.
