The 20th (November 1943) Dearest: It's amazing what a man has to do to get a letter off to his best beloved! I am up here at 28000 feet, with my oxygen mask and fur lined clothing on. While we are on bombing runs, I am going to steal some time to write. That sound melodramatic I suppose but honest-to-God, cross-my-heart time is as scarce and as budgeted out to us as that. There is scarcely a minute that has not two calls for it. Every once in a while I glance down at my oxygen delivery box to see the flutter-valves at work and then be sure of my supply.
