2 once began for the homeward march. Nicholasville, Kentucky, being the nearest point at which railroad transportation could be secured, hence, on the 11th day of January we broke camp at Blain's Cross Roads, and the line of march began. The route lay through Morrisville, Tennessee, Cumberland Gap, Barboursville, Mount Vernon, Crab Orchard, Lancaster, and Camp Nelson to Nicholasville, Kentucky. The march was attended with great suffering on the part of some of the men, who owing to the siege of Knoxville, and supplies having been cut off, had worn out their clothing and shoes.
