5 almost zero, and as there was no place but the open square of the town in which to encamp, the boys took possession of a hotel, spreading their blankets on the floor, very much against the will of the proprietor, and remained all night. When ariving at the foot of Wild Cat mountain the regiment was considerably in advance of the wagon train, an old man (a citizen) met us and said "gentlemen the Colonel said I should tell you to go up over the mountains and he would meeet you at the other side" - at the same time he remarked that to go around the mountain it was seven miles
