8 Elias Bixler, of Company A, and for some reason the chains slipped from under the wheels; the maules being unable to hold the wagon were compelled to keep out of the way, hence, the driver cracked his whip and the team started down the mountain road at a full gallop. Fortunately he succeeded in getting down without accident, but it was a fearful sight and all expected to see him and his wagon go over the precipice. Again when crossing Cumberland Gap: the road runs around a point where the incline is toward a precipice of several hundred feet. Here the wagons were worked with drag chains
