32 in line of battle. The Cooks of each Company were placed under my charge, as Commissary Sergeant, and it is now my duty to see that the rations are cooked and delivered to men, on the march and battle field. The booming of canon and the rattle of musketry indicates a sharp battle not far off. Friday, May 6th 1864. The battle opened this morning about five oclock, but we were not engaged until sometime later in the day.
