57 Cold Harbor, Va - Monday, June 6th 1864 This morning quite a number of fresh troops came and were placed in position, also eight siege guns, each drawn by sixteen horses. During the day estimates were made out for clothing - Everything very quiet all day until 10 oclock this evening when a heavy artillery duel took place, lasting about half an hour. Tuesday 7th The rebels opened fire this morning about three oclock, and again about four in the afternoon, driving our pickets in. During this skirmish Joel Howenstein, of Co "A." was wounded and Thomas Toolan, of Co "K" killed.
