67 Front of Petersburg, Va Friday June 24. 1864 Heavy skirmishing this morning, and an artillery duel which was almost as hot as the weather. During the cannonading Josiah Wright, of Company E was wounded. Our Division was relieved this morning and again placed on the front line farther to the left. Saturday 25th Corporal Wm Beary of Company I was killed, by a sharpshooter, evidently from a tree. Sergeant Brown of Company C was slightly wounded. A ration of whiskey was issued to the boys.
