89 Front of Petersburg, Va - Monday Augt 1. 1864 The flag of truce was accepted this morning and the wounded and dead removed. many of the dead however were burried where they lay. It is reported that the rebels are again in Pennsylvania, and that Chambersburg has been burnt by them. Tuesday 2nd This was a quiet day - a shower of rain this evening relieved us some of the exceeding heat. Wednesday 3d Lieut. Eckel's horse ran away today hence he had to walk to City Point - Later in the day I secured the horse and sent him by Franklin Weary of Co. "A" to City Point. Bot. a pair of shoes.
