Birds Point Mo Oct 14th 1861. My dear darling wife:- All well this morning. I have just been relieved from guard duty and taken a wash all over with warm water & actual soap, & had Paddy to rub me with a linen towel & I tell you I feel nice enough for one of your sweetest kisses. I never felt better in my life and would be perfectly happy was it not for the fact that I am away from her upon whom all the tenderness, [manliness?], and affection [centers?] - my dear darling Clara. O beloved how dear you are to me this morning. My whole life and thought is taken up with a constant thrill of love for you and a longing solicitude for your interests. I presume I will get a letter or two from you tomorrow. The mail brings me nothing on Mondays. Expect [?] will bring me one. Bless you dear darling heart, how very anxious I am each day
