Have you recovered from the shock of the late assassination I tell you that was quite an unexpected occurrence to us, truly horrible & disgraceful to the nation I never was an admirer of his still I could not help feeling a regret that his life should have such an unhappy End, at a time too when he was becoming more tolerable than he had ever been how his career might have terminated we are unable to know, but now he sleeps with the silent dead, and we can only hope that his place will be ably filled by his successor, I presume the war at least is over & the clash of arms will not be heard soon again I pray on this bit of creation, I believe I [Upside down at top of this and previous page:] I cannot say I experienced your feeling on being introduced to the "other side" in fact I didn't care a fiddlestick what is the use
