HQ, 80th Inf Div Camp Forrest, Tenn January 29, 1943 Dearest Dorothea: No letter from you today but suppose you have been busy. Or maybe you thought I wouldn't be here much longer - which is correct. I applied for one day leave - tomorrow - and will have 4 days to go up there. I was unable to sell the old car so will have to drive it. I got one Class III tire which is one built of partially reclaimed rubber. It cost 10.75 & a new tube cost 2.00. Then $1.30 for repair of three tires and put them on this noon and am all ready to pack & leave. I'll just drive in the day time and stop in the evening and eat and go to a show or something to go to bed & get up and leave early the next morning. I should have plenty of time - even if I should have some trouble. When I get to Ann Arbor, I'll store the car and take a taxi out to the school & leave the jalopy in storage. Then when I get an assignment I can travel there & then sell it. I think it will work pretty good. How are all the sick & ailing? Hope they are much improved or even well. Enclosed is a $25.00 bond.
