[August 31, 1918] Friday. My Dearest Bess. I recieved your letter this evening. The mail had come in late and I had been thinking it would not come. After I had given up I went to the box and sure enough it had arrived. I enjoy hearing about every thing you do. I can see you around the house there at home. I do now that the thought will enable me to stand the troubles and dissapoint ments that are bound to come up. I was due for a promotion when our chief changed and so I must wait again
