Nov. 29, 1942. Dear Dad & Mom: I'm going to try and write this on the train and it is really shaking around some so excuse the scrawl. We got away about eleven this morning we were to leave at seven so we werent far behind schedule. We all got up at 4:30 this morn so you see we were in plenty of time. The country is far from scenic where Im travelling now just range country with a little scrub pine on the ridges. See a bunch of cattle occasionally and now and then a band of horses so there is some life around here. Once in a while you see a kind of a lonly looking ranch house and a few outbuildings. I should think they would use a little paint once in a while and try and get some trees growing. We are climbing and so we have a heavy train load we move very slowly. Just saw a coyote not far away he seemed quite unafraid, didnt even run when we passed. Most of the fellows are reading or sleeping we are quite crowded and it gets tiresome riding they dont allow us to get off the train so about the only exercise you get is walking up & down the aisles We are not being fed on the diner this trip so the food
