Dec. 26, 1942 Tucson, Arizona Dear Dad & Mom: Boy did I shine at mail call today got twenty cards and letters & a box of cookies from Aunt Jennie and one from Aunt Cara. Nearly all the cards had a nice note on them and in Jim & Irmas was a letter from Irma a greeting from Rommy & a note from Jim and a $5 money order. a fellow cant help but feel good when so many folks remember him. Its been quite raw today not cold but the wind blew and it was cloudy all day. Worked today stringing the control cables that work the rudder & tail assembly it is quite a job Also we are putting new rubber hoses between tanks in the wings. It is kind of cramped quarters to work in. Just got a pair of shoes from the supply I surely got quick repair on them & a good job. Sent them in Wednesday and they were back Friday (Beats Sahara doesnt it and they were well repaired. Ive surely walked off a lot soles & heels. They are usually rubber composition and I think the gasoline & oil is very hard on them. Ive had a lot of razzing today about being a sergeant but I guess it will soon wear off Im sure glad to have the rank but wish a lot more of the fellows had the same as I know lots of them deserve it as much and more than I do. I think I have the advantage over lots of the fellows when a guy is fat an extremely tall an red headed. You are noticed and if you are working when they see you the officers remember you and perhaps will sanction a rating. Of course that works both ways if Im not around or loafing that would be noticed too
