April 24, 1943 Pocatello, Idaho Dear Dad & Mom: Got a letter from you and one from Grandma today. Was happy to get both. Its been another real spring day, cool this morning but its still warm now at 7:30 P.M. We need a few warm spring rains however as the ground is very dry. maybe thats the way it always is here tho. Im kind of down in the dumps tonite my good friend Jackson got a call to attend O.C.S. (Officer Candidate School) He had put in for it quite a time back and got his call at noon and left by 3 P.M. I have been with him since July last year and he is a good egg. I expect that puts me back in charge of the plane again tho nothing official has been said. The past three weeks have been about the happiest since I've been in the army, no worries, wont make anymore now and have lots more to think about. I expect you will hear about the plane crash we had here last night so I might as well tell you just how it happened. One of our ships was going out at 4 A.M. for take off, just as he was ready some electrical trouble developed and all his lights went out. He was going to return to the line but before he could another plane started down the runway to take off (not our squadron) he saw the ship just before he reached
