Saving...
Feby 4th 1919. My Dearest Bess. I suppose you will think that I am doing nothing but write but I do not know how soon I may not be able to get any mail out so I am making good use of my time. Am still here at the capitol city of Serbia and it is a curious mixture of fairly well to do and and the awful poor. The poverty and the wretchedness are almost beyond belief. Little kids 3 - 4 yrs old that can not walk because of rickets and no clothes but gunny sack for a sort of combination jacket and dress. Some of the older ones go around with nothing on their legs. One girl came in with no shoes but a wooden sole tied on to her feet by strings, and the weather is like our Feb'y weather too. They say conditions are much worse in the interior but I do see how they could be much worse and have people live. The kids seem happy though because they do not know any different.
