1861-03-07 -- 1861-03-09

Thurs. 7    Father and myself started with the team about 5 o'clock for Western this morning.  The weather is extremely cold this morning threatening more snow and storm.  We came into the said town a little before noon.  Took dinner at Wagner's, and took my thing to Ehrhart's, with the intention of boarding there this term, but found that it is too noisy here.  I entered college this afternoon.  I find this institution in a rather embarrassing condition, it seems to be sinking, a number of its students are gong to leave and go to Iowa city.  The people seemed to be very glad to see me back and the faculty urged me to accept the janitorship but I refused it for many reasons.
Friday 8    I recited in Greek this morning.  I am going to study The four Gospels in Greek, Virgil, and Geometry.  I commenced boarding at Prof. Bartletts' at $1.75 cts pr. week, I think I have a very fine place to stay, although it is some distance from the college.  Weather cold.
Sat. 9.    The gold pen which Mr. Ady gave to me was lost at the hotel in Iowa city, and I was afraid that I should never again see it, but to my great joy, I rec'd a letter from C. H. Lionhardt informing me that it is alright.  I wrote three or four letters.
