1861-05-02 -- 1861-05-04

Thurs. 2.    For the first time in my life did I perform the duty of guard from 9:20 to 11:20.  Some fellow had the nightmare and created considerable excitement. Mr. Ady sent me a certificate of deposit on the State bank, which was refused by the bankers at this place on account of the kind of currency for which it called. I was advised by Mr. Weare to send it to Iowa City and get the currency and if it does not come before we leave here he promised to advance the money.  I sent it to E. Clarke.  I am very much afraid of having difficulty with this affair.  But I have risked it.
Friday. 3.    Early this morning we were presented each with two shirts, 1 pr. of shoes, 1 hat, 1 pr. socks, and 1 pr. pants.  We drilled in our new uniform and created considerable interest with citizens.  The weather is very cold.
Satur. 4.    We drilled this morning .  Met this afternoon at two o'clock, paraded till three, when we were drawn up into line, before Greene's hotel where, the citizens presented us with a beautiful flag and fine Bible, telling speeches were made by some of the citizens.  Numerous cheers were given, and great enthusiasm prevailed! A dispatch came in from the government stating that we should march tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.  It was received with large cheers by the company.
