Frid. 23 I was so unfortunate as to have the chills to an alarming extent today, reducing me very much. Our regiment recieved its pay. I received $52.00 which is of course very acceptable, thus closes my brief but eventful military career. Most of the companies departed for home this evening. Sat. 24 Recruiting offices are opened all over town. I bade farewell to some of my friends in Co. B who left for Iowa city this afternoon. Made some necessary purchases. Sun. 25. The streets are as lively today and almost so noisy as though this day were not at all recognized as a day of rest, many places of amusements are open. Mon. 26. I made arrangements this morning with Prof. Jones to enter his Commercial College. Tuition for a full course will cost me. $65.00. Hugo Schuster returned. Tues. 27. Visited my bother Charles, and took a trip into the country with him, where I had an excellent time. The weather is getting to be comfortably cool. Gen Lyon's body arrived here, from Springfield,. A young man was brutally murdered in this neighborhood. Wed. 28. Wrote several letters this morning. This afternoon I accompanied the funeral procession of our heroic Lyon which was attended by Gen. Fremont and staff. It was conducted by Gen. Sigel, it was grand, the body is to be conveyed to his relatives in Connecticut. I entered Jone's Commercial College for a full course, and paid $20.00
