1861-11-09 -- 1861-11-14

Sat. 9. I went to Muscatine, attended, the organization of the Muscatine Co. Teachers Association, we had a pretty pleasant time. I was appointed member of the executive committee. I returned after dark, and felt pretty cold on the way.
Sun. 10. I enployed the forenoon in writing and reading feeling more like staying at home than going abroad. Visited [Cavell's?] family, where Ed Cavell is sick. Returned late in the evening.
Mon. 11. My school is rapidly filling up. I have 30 pupils now, and many more expect to come. I feel very much like teaching too.
Tues. 12.Glorious news of our fleet is reaching us, several southern ports have been taken the rebels are trembling with frantic excitement about our naval successes.  Hurrah for the union.  Louisa Ady arrived home from school.
Wed 13. Nothing except my accustomed routine of daily duty attracted my attention today.  I sometimes wish, I could teach better.
Thurs. 14. The 7th Regt. I.V. suffered dreadfully at Belmont Mo.  Some of the Muscatine boys were killed, the rebels, sustained  a dreadful loss, our troops were victorious at an awful sacrifice, our brave Lt. Col Wentz, capt. in 1st I. was killed, here.  Heroic man.
