Saving...
Thurs. 15. Had considerable difficulty in starting a fire in the school house, succeeded in getting a good one finally. Had an interesting school. The weather is very much like winter, it being very cold, and snow 6 inches deep. Fri. 17. Nothing of special notice has come to my ears. I do not see why we do not have more war news, since we have such a powerful army and navy, I am opposed to this inaction, I would almost prefer a defeat than this lamentable inactivity, for my part I think the administration is too conservative in carrying on the war. Sat. 18. It snowed a few inches last night, the temperature of the weather is pretty mild this morning. I am in good health & spirits. Went hunting and had an interesting time. Travelled many miles, through deep snow, broke through the ice, and got into the creek, tore my boots and pants, shot six times and killed one rabbit, returned home a wiser but not a better man, fatigued and hungry, concluded hunts do not pay in this country, at this time. Weather mild. Sun. 19. I felt pretty lazy, read the "Koran" nearly all day, some curious statements and doctrines are laid down in it by the great religious imposter [Mehammet?]. Wrote a letter to friend Allan. Mr. Joshua Leonard's family was here, and made considerable noise.
