Thurs. 30. Our brave Gen. Sigel is unanimously supported by his countrymen, who seem very anxious to retain him as a General, mass meetings are held throughout the union endorsing his actions, I hope he will withdraw his resignation. And a movement is now on foot to create him a major General of the volunteer forces. Sun. 31. Nothing of importance took place today. Our naval expeditions have not accomplished any material thing yet, I hope they soon may. Sat February 1. Another month has started into being, but does not find us much ahead of the preceding, when will our armies advance and crush this iniquitous rebellion? I employed my time in reading and writing; this was a pretty cold day. Sun. 2. Went to the Center to hear Mr. Pencer preach, the room was very cold and so was the sermon. Read most of the time in P.N. Mon. 3. Nothing of special importance came off today. I have a bad cold. Snow is deep. Tues. 4. I staid at Mr. [?] tonight where I received a very cordial welcome and had an excellent time with the old folks, they entertained one quite well.
