Frid. 7. I went, pretty early, to the school-house, where I built a fire, hung up the pictures intended for premiums, had the house cleaned, and made preparations for the examination. I commenced the examination about 10 o'clock A.M. taking the least advanced classes first. The patrons of the school came gathering in one after another until nearly every family in the district was represented. The examination went off pretty well, and all seemed well satisfied. Then we had our declamations spoken and our essays read, which were well received. I appointed committees to award the different prizes and they awarded them to the following individuals: Emily Ady, J. Kennedy, I.G. Stewart, L.L. Ady, and Sarah Carter. I also granted a prize to Geo. W. Stewart and Clark Matthews for exemplary conduct. After a short address by one, and an essay from Mr. Ady, I dismissed the assembly. Many of the children and patrons of the school came up and bade me a feeling farewell, thanking me kindly for labors during this term. I have the [headaches?] Sat. 8 Went to town, where I attended the Teachers' Assoc. I settled up my accounts at the book store. But I am sorry to say that I have to pay over $4. for which I received no benefit. I rode to the chapel with W. Chambers, where a quarterly meeting was in progress. Thence I went to [Maj. Sherfeg's?], where I had a pleasant time, though the family are rebel sympathisers.
