1862-03-27 -- 1862-03-31

Thurs. 27  I felt very much better and have some hopes again of going to Muscatine next Monday.  The weather is very fine.
Fri. 28  Mailed several letters today.  Received a few newspapers, which contain noting of special importance save the passage of the Homestead Bill, which gives every citizen 160 acres of government land under certain provisions this is a good law and should have been passed sooner.  It takes effect Jan 1. ’63.
Sat. 29  The ground is very wet and the farmers are growling over the backward Spring  I still feel weak, but know that I am convalescent.  I long to be employed again.
Sun. 30  I am preparing to leave tomorrow.  Visited my uncle who was well pleased to see me, had a long talk with him.  My parents are making pretty good headway, in their agricultural pursuits.  
Mon. 31  This morning I bade our folks farewell, and started in a wagon with Henry as driver to the colony, where I expected to be ferried over the river, the road was very bad, came too late for the boat and was compelled to wait until tomorrow, I spent a very profitable day, I visited the school here.  I stayed with father Haas.  Good people.
