1862-04-11 -- 1862-04-14

Fri. 11. Mr. Ady came into town and paid me Eighty Five Dollars on my school order making in all $100.00 that I received on it. We received intelligence of a dreadful battle on Pittsburg Landing Ten. It was the hardest fought battle that ever happened on this continent. The battle continued for two days, Sunday & Mon. the 6th and 7th inst.. Our forces were worsted on the first day, being completely surprised, owing to bad generalship, the commanding officer of our forces was Gen. U, S, Grant.  But the second day however our troops were reinforced by Gen. Buell’s army, Buell taking command; our forces repulsed the enemy in splendid style, and although our loss was heavy, we gained a victory. 
Sat. 12. We are having a dreadful rainy season just now, the streets and the roads are barely passable. I deposited $50.00 in the State Bank. 
Sun. 13. The citizens are very much excited by this recent battle, the city had seven companies of as good men in the fight as can be produced any where, some families have to mourn the loss of some noble sons, I fear. 
Mon. 14. The news which we receive from the field of battle is very meager and this many an anxious heart is kept in the most agonizing suspense, the Iowa regiments fought nobly, but were dreadfully thinned.
