Thurs. 24. Glorious news has reached us from Washington city, the horrid system of slavery, the curse which is the cause of the present internecine war, is abolished in the District of Colombia, may the emancipation spread until the shackles are taken from every bondman in the world. Down, down with Slavery, let freemen assert their godgiven powers to crush this direful wrong against God and humanity, and wash the stain from the fair escutcheon of our glorious republic Fri. 25. Some of the rebel prisoner passed up the river, on their to Milwaukee, we did not see them for the boat did not stop here. The fourth Minn. Regt.[I.?] went down to St. Louis. Sat. 26. I received a letter from Messrs Barnes & Burr Publishers in N. York, containing an order for some books on a firm in Burlington, I put it into the hands of the Am. Expr. Co. The Miss Ady's came to town and I went to the office of the County Superintendent with them, where they were examined in the common English Branches, they sustained a good examination, and received certificates. Mr. Edward Hayes and I went out in a buggy to Mr. Ady's and got my trunk, in, we were received quite friendly, did not stop long however, the roads are pretty dusty. Returned home quite late. Feel well.
