Saving...
Thurs. 1 May 1st. The long expected month has at last come to us. This is the Flower month, but this day is decidedly too cool, for the little beauties to show themselves. The Young Men of Greenwood Academy organized a Wicket-Club, of which I was chosen 1st Lt. We had a fine game. Fri. 2. Our total loss at Corinth is about 14.000, a terrible figure. Our troops have taken New Orleans. The rebels are evacuating Corinth. Cheering news is reaching us from all parts of the States of the success of our arms. Onward brave boys. The river is very high and is still rising here. Sat. 3. Finished reading Dr. E. K. Kane's "Arctic Explorations," an exceedingly graphic account of the sufferings of his party in search of Sir J. Franklin, among the icy polar regions of the north. News was received to day, that Baton Rouge the capital of Lousiana is taken by our troops. Sun 4. I rode out to Ady's to day, found them all well, but did not feel at home. Went over to Paces where I received a cordial welcome. Started to town completely dissatisfied with my trip. Met several of my friends on the road with whom I had a pleasant talk. Arrived in town in good season, but found my horse a little lame.
