Saving...
Mon.5.More glorious news today,Yorktown is evacuated by the rebels and is now in possession of our troops. Gen. Mc.Clelan, sent cavalry and artillery in pursuit and perhaps our army will come up with them and have a fight. Our wicket club met this evening we had an excellent time, it gives us fine exercise.Tues.6. The river is very high and it is feared will yet do considerable damage here, the people are at work attempting to keep it within its proper limits. More cheering news has reached us from our army near Yorktown the rebels are probably caught and whipped gloriously by this time.Wed.7. I heard the celebrated wit Artemus Ward last night at Tremont Hall, he gave us a few spicy jokes, yet take it in the main, and his lecture did not reach the anticipated standard. The weather is pretty warm today. [Recd?] & wrote several letters. Played a fine game of Wicket Ball.Thurs.8. Our army is everywhere triumphant, the rebels are flying in every direction. The issue of this unholy contest is no longer doubtful, our success may be delayed, but it will eventually come. The father of waters is finally falling. The District Court is now in session here, but making very little progress.
