Mon. 26 Studied pretty hard during the greater part of the day. Spent the evening in company with [Mr.] [Goodno] and other teachers among who was Mr. Adams of Rockford Ill.A very queer man indeed. Our army near Potomac [refused]. Tues. 27 The weather continues quite cool,studied hard Dr. [Goodno] wants me to make another trip through some townships, and I am going to start tomorrow. A recruiting office has been opened here, whereof H. J. Campbell is chief, he expects to have his company full in a few days. Many rumors came in today. Wed 2(9)8 Left town quite early this morning and canvassed township seventy-six, met [wife] Maria Higgs. Staid a short time with Mr. [Eckel] who was glad to see me talked about his son William, had a good time. Saw some more U. B. families who were glad to see me, they supposed I would make a preacher. Staid with Mr. Griffin. Thurs. 29 Visited a good many schools today, had a glorious time. The earth is clad in all her grandeur now, enjoyed the beauties of fair nature very much. I stirred up the teachers and directors to their great work. Arrived in [muscaline] about 7 o'clock P.M. Recieved a letter from W. J. Jackson which did me a great deal of good, he is at western
