1862-06-28 -- 1862-07-02

Sat. 28 I went out to Ady's with [Atherl] Libley. Had a very pleasant chat with some of the farmers. Found Ady's family alright, settled the difficulty between E. and myself amicably.
Sun 29 Did not attend divine worship this morning. The weather was very warm. I attended church in the evening at the baptist church. 
Mon. 30 Miss C.A. Barrows and I visited, Miss [Reader's] Mr. McCampbell's and Miss Barrows' schools, had a very pleasant time. Returned by [sunset]. 

                                                                                      July 1st

Tues. 1 Great preparations are being made for the celebration of the coming 4th of July. I [recv'd] an invitation from my German fellow citizens to address them on that [occasion]  which I accepted.
Wed. 2 This morning the [live] M.E. S.S. [fornced] and marched out with the [martial] band. [ I. G.O.] and J.A. Parvin and myself at the head. After we arrived on the grounds, Parvin made an address, consisting principally of anecdotes, I addressed the schools after him, and recieved numerous compliments for my address, good judges awarding to me [A] [praise] of having made the best speech on the grounds, after judge Williams spoke. [We] had a very excellent time, went home about 5 o'clock P.M. A strange personage selling wizard oil made his appearance in our city, he [retires] in the [street], to a very large crowd.
