Saving...
Thurs. 17 We had a turkey dinner at our house, and had some company present. I studied pretty hard and made some progress. I learned that my friend G. W. Sedgwick has enlisted, success to him. Nothing of special importance today. Fri. 18 We are having considerable rain, it rained today and has rained for a few days occasionally, the crops with the exception of spring wheat are said to be in an excellent condition. Keeler spoke to me about joining his company, I do not think I will do it. I will not go as private unless I am forced to go. I'lI not go unless I can get a commission as officer. I feel patriotic enough to go as a private, but I think my knowledge and experience entitle me to a higher position. Sat. 19 I met a party from Weslin College, consisting of Misses Miller and Neidig, and Mr. Neidig, had a pleasant time together. Started on the Kate Kassel for Clinton this evening. I am going to get a commission to raise a Company of Germans in this dist. Sun. 20 We laid at Rock Island over night, and started early for Davenport, passed the town and the bridge a little after sun rise. We had a company from Lucas County on board, rough fellows. Reached Clinton about 11 A.M. Were kindly provided for at the [I. C. H.?]
