Saving...
Sat. 26 Applicants for a [lieutenancy?] are quite numerous. I think a company in which every man ranks as lieutenant could be raised speedily. I did not do much of any thing today. Attended a German party at the Town Halle, the first which I have attended for a number of years. Sun. 27 I am falling away from my Christian duties, I did not attend church this A.M. nor S.S. this P.M. but spent my time idly. Spent the evening profitably in Co. with my Western friends. Mon. 28 The war news which is reaching us from our armies is not of a very flattering character every where the rebels are taking the offensive and generally prove victorious. Oh what an awful [visitation?] is upon my country! May our national [illegible] be speedily eradicated and God's benign [countenance?] smile once more upon us, his sinful children. Tues. 29 Mr. [illegible] [Sibley?] spent today partly in my office studying bookkeeping under me. I visited Barrows family. Recruiting is about played out. I think I have been captain long enough, patriotism is at present decidedly below par, money is offered for recruits. [Majors?] Hayes returned from Galesburg. Wed. 30 Joseph Mayer associated himself with me, we are going to make a powerful effort to organize my German Company.
