Saving...
Tues. 5. Doran and I left the boat about 4 A.M. at Davenport, and strolled about town since we could not enter the Scott House. Finally got in took breakfast, saw my friends on the boat which came back from Rock Island. Saw Charles Hill who went with me to different individuals to assist me in recruiting but every thing looks discouragingly. Had an advertisement put in the paper. Worked all day without success. Wed. 6. A new order directing recruiting to cease by the 15th inst. and drafting to commence by the 4th of Sept. has been issued by the war department, this will hurry up recruits. I started for Marengo, where I arrived about noon. Called at Bischop’s where I met a cordial welcome, went home, found all well except father, they are opposed to my going, still I consoled them with the hope that I would return. The weather is warm. Thurs. 7 Started from home on foot, for Cedar Rapids, got as far Mc. Quin’s school house, went in and staid a little while made a speech to the children, then proceeded on my journey. I was soon over taken by a good team and carriage, and had the pleasure of riding the rest of the distance. It was very warm.
