Saving...
Fri. 8 Stop at the Valley City Hotel. I found the war excitement pretty high here most of my old comrades in arms have again volunteered. Although every body seems to be going to war yet nobody is willing to leave the county. I was willing to leave the county. I met [Langdon?] with whom I went out to my old alma mater at Western where nearly every body is going to war, the town will be almost entirely deserted. My friends seemed to be glad to see me. Sat. 9. This morning early I left with the stage for Iowa city, had a pleasant trip. Arrived at the city about noon, the greatest excitement was going on there, thousands of people had gathered there to hear the Governor and H. O’Connor speak. I took dinner and left with the train going East. Got off at Moscow, took supper at Schaffnit’s went to the Albright church, where we had a good war meeting, made a speech and got 4 rec. Sun. 10 Staid in the settlement, and saw a good many persons about going with me, some promised to come in. Went to church. Mon. 11 Schafnit took me and my recruits to town quite a lively interest manifested by the citizens with regard to my company have about 16 men enrolled now, prospects good.
