Saving...
Tues. 12 I have worked pretty hard now, and hope my labor has not been in vain. The papers keep puffing me, volunteering is going slowly though they know that it ceases on the 15th, a great many prefer to be drafted. Wed. 13. Went out to Montpelier township, and all through that section of country, saw some men who are willing to volunteer. Appointed a meeting for tomorrow evening. Came home late, after my arrival it rained terribly. Thurs. 14. Went out to Montpelier School House with the martial band, added two mules to our train at the Center, the roads were very bad, and we came near upsetting, we reached the school house in safety however and proceeded to rouse the patriotism of the people by speech and music. I got 3 recruits. Started for home, where we arrived at 3 A.M. Tired and sleepy. Fri. 15. Staid in town and worked among the men who are about ready to volunteer. Got a few. My company is crawling up slowly. Rec. an order from Gen. Baker that recruiting ceases to day. The companies in town are filling up rapidly. John’s will be full before night. Had a “war” speech by Rev. Evans, it did not do any good to my company though it was of benefit to John.
