Sat. 16 Sent to the Governor to ascertain whether I can have my time extended. Rec. the reply that I might go on, so we are going to make another powerful effort to fill my company. I have now about 40 men. Sun. 17. C. Kranz associated himself with us, he intends to run as 2d Lt. Now we are going to work in earnest. The people think I will never raise my company to minimum numbers, but I tell them that “Geo. C. Burmeister never undertook anything yet without making it a success.” I still hope. Mon. 18. Time for recruiting is extended till the 23d inst. I hope to have my company filled by that time. Frank Köhler and I started for Blue Grass on a recruiting tour. But it was a luckless one. We came to Wilton, thence to the German settlement were I made a war speech, and 5 recruits, we had a very excellent time. Reached town about 12 P.M. Tues. 19. Feel very sleepy today, owing to the arduous incessant labor at night, but still the future looks bright, my company is filling up fast. I have now about 65 men. Wed. 20. This evening we had a German mass meeting at the court house. We had splendid music and eloquent speeches, without any recruits.
