Thurs. 21 My men are at work in good earnest now trying to fill up the company, if we had worked from the beginning as we are working now we would have our company filled by this time. O, I feel a great anxiety to have it full, the other captains promised to give me some of their men, after we get to camp but I do not believe they will, I am going to work as though no such promise existed. Fri. 22. To day I received notice to report the number of men I have at the Adj. Gen’s office, the time for recruiting is extended till tomorrow. This afternoon and evening we had an exciting time, we took in some very fine men, our company is nearly up to the minimum number now. Tomorrow we organize. Sat. 23. We took in a few more recruits this forenoon. This afternoon we elected officers. I was chosen captain by the unanimous acclamation of my men. I responded in a brief speech. Joseph Mayer was elected 1st Lt. Conrad Kranz was elected 2d Lt. After the election I paraded the company through town, sent them out to the brewery after bidding them farewell. I was cheered. Cars were in motion as I jumped on the cars in company with 5 other captains.
