Saving...
Sat. 20. Drilled a little this morning. Went to town at noon and got my new uniform which is a splendid fit made by tailor, Koehl who took special pains with it. I also got my sword belt, sash and [bugle?]. I was received with three cheers by my company. Took my company and Captain Flanagan out to form an escort for the regimental flag which the ladies of Muscatine are going to present to our Regiment. We did it up in fine style. The flag was presented by Miss Mary Gordon, and received by Major H. O’Connor, then my company received it. It is a splendid flag and never shall traitor hands touch it, as long as we are able to defend it. My company has special charge of it. Sun. 21. Nearly all of my company has left camp for town. I remained in camp to do some writing. While I was making ready for dinner, I was agreeably surprised to have my mother step into my barracks, she had travelled the entire distance from home alone on the cars. She was very glad to see me. I took her over to Naeve’s where she was decently clad and had a sumptuous dinner. She staid with me nearly all day. The company paid considerable attention to her because she is my mother. I learned that things at home do not exactly work right, they must work hard, and are getting no better off than they were before. She wants money of me.
