Saving...
Mon. 22. Went up town and ascertained the cost of my uniform which is over $50.00. Learned the Paymaster is going to pay my men their month’s wages in advance. He paid them this evening. The officers did not receive one cent which is rather a bad affair since since I for one need it to pay off my debts we will have to wait until next pay day which will be perhaps a whole month yet. The boys are in excellent spirits now, they all rejoice that they have some money at least with which they can relieve their and their families wants. I feel satisfied because they are. Tues. 23. Went up town and settled some of my bills, borrowed $50.00 of Henry Frank, payable in sixty days with ten percent interest from date paid over $25.00 to fit my mother out who went to Schafnit’s, to pay them a visit thence to start home, she seemed to enjoy her visit very much. God bless the old woman. My Lts and I took an excellent supper at my former boarding place, Jellsion’s; Albert and I started for Camp, where we arrived in good season on Mr. Naeve’s wagon. Cool night. Wed. 24. The aspect of affairs concerning our cause are brighening, the rebels are retreating before the victorious army of the Potomac under Gen. G.B. Mc.Clellan. The President issued a proclamation declaring all slaves free after Jan. 1st 1863.
