1862-09-25 -- 1862-09-28

Thurs. 25.  Went up town and settled part of my debts paid Drake $30.00. Silvermann $10.00 Jellison $15.00.  My men are in excellent health.  Went hunting this evening with Kranz, killed three ducks.  My men are doing very well in drill.
Fri.  26.  Exercised my company in drill this A.M. and this afternoon the regiment had battalion drill.  Took another hunt this evening, Kranz killed four ducks.  The state of the weather and the health of our men are in splendid condition.  Met J. B. Stein who treated us to an oyster supper.
Sat. 27.  Some young ladies treated me to a good dinner.  Went to town this morning and purchased ammunition for a general hunt this afternoon.  I excused 15 of my men with a lieutenant for his purpose.  I had to stay at home because we have battalion drill, which does not amount to much however.  The weather is pleasant.  I do not admire my officers as much as I desire to, since they do not possess sufficient moral principle, to make them what they should be.
Sun. 28.  I scarcely dress up for dress parade except Sundays when we are visited by crowds of people and for the uniformity of the thing.  I comply to put myself in my best trim and appear as well as I can.
