Saving...
Mon. 29. It is already beginning to feel chilly and it has the appearance of rain, we are progressing finely with our battalion drill. My men are admired by all, for their good behavior and excellent drill. The news from the seat of war is good for our arms, our armies are victorious every where. Tues. 30. Again am I compelled to record the close of another month, which passed amid many changes, thousands of our poor comrades were hit by the fatal bullets, sent on their course from the muzzle of guns in traitors’ hands, yet we will avenge their death as becomes the faithful soldiery of our glorious young state of Iowa, which has shed a halo of glory around it that shall last forever, and with pride will the coming generation look upon the record of daring valor that will be handed down to it by faithful historians of this war. Wed. 1. October 1st This day commenced with rain, and the fine dinner which the ladies promised us did not arise, but something better came for my personal benefit. My men desiring to show their esteem towards me, presented me with a splendid sword and sword knot costing $40.00. The committee presented the sword with a speech to which I replied in German and English.
