Saving...
Thurs. 2. The rain which has commenced in earnest is doing some damage in camp and a good many soldiers feel its bad effects upon their health now, we prepared for it in our quarters by laying a floor, and making things tight draining the surroundings of our quarters &co. every body is admiring our barracks an says they are the best in camp. Fri. 3. We have not drilled any for sometime owing to the very bad weather, we are still fixing up; my boys work with a will to have things arranged for their comfort. We had a good time to day because the rain ceased and old Sol looked forth from beneath the frowning clouds with as much complacency and cheerfulness as ever, he brightened many soldier up, who was gloomy. Sat. 4. I was officer of the day. Had things cleaned up around the camp, ditches dug &co. in expectation of the Governor’s appearance here today or tomorrow. I had considerable sport in making the Grand Rounds. I slept in the barber shop till quite late in the morning satisfied that my term of office had expired and I was again free to go where and when I please. The weather has again assumed a cheerful aspect, and the sick list in camp seems to be decreasing. One soldier (the first of the 24. R.) died in Camp & was buried today.
