1862-10-08 -- 1862-10-11

Wed. 8.  Early this morning Capt. Doran and I went around town to transact some business, the rain continuing so that we could not go down to camp.  In the evening I wandered to a certain place, where I was welcomed by a friend whose hospitalities I accepted for the night.  I had excellent lodging, I enjoyed a good sleep.  
Thurs. 9  This morning I went back to camp where my men were glad to see me, having been absent absent one day and two nights.  My 2d Lt took a trip to Burlington.  Some of my men were also furloughed.  I wrote a good many letters to my friends.
Fri. 10  Went to Fremont Hall this evening with 47 of my men to hear Ho. Hiram Price and C.C. Nourse speak, on the great political questions of the day.  They made the best speeches that I have heard for some time.  We returned, in the best spirits about 10 ½ P.M.
Sept. 11.  Nothing of great moment today.  The arms of the 24 R. came today, they are the true Enfield rifles, the boys are proud of them, they are splendid guns.  The 24. expects to leave pretty soon.  We are having things arranged with the calculation that we can stay five or six weeks longer.  I did not feel very well today, owing to a bad cold that I have.  Rec. $40.00.
