Saving...
Sun. 12. This morning I dressed myself and went to the German M.E. Church, met a good many friends and listened to a sermon by Rev. Hillweg who has a son in my comp. Took dinner with Frind. Hartmann. Came to camp where I found numerous visitors. Took my book, went up stairs and read, the “Vicars of Wakefield”. Just as I had finished it the drums beat for a dress parade. I dressed up and took my company out. We had a very good one. The 24. came out in full uniform, with arms, they make a find appearance. It is a good Regiment. Mon. 13. I have caught a severe cold, which makes me feel very disagreeable. We are arranging our quarters for the accommodation of the commissioned officers, we have been seriously annoyed by our men and now we are making an up stairs where we expect to enjoy more quiet. Turs. 14. We had an exciting time in camp, it being election day by a recent law of our legislature the Iowa soldiers are permitted to vote. I did my very best to introduce order among the men and was totally successful. The soldiers are voting by two thirds the Republican ticket, and I am astonished at my own company who vote about is the same rates, whilst a good many formerly professed the democratic creed. Time and men change.
