Saving...
Wed. 15. The battle at Corinth Miss. where the Iowa boys with 15.000 men, signally defeated the rebels with 40.000 men is reported to have been a terribly bloody affair. 2.000 rebs. killed and about the same number wounded and captured, making their loss 6.000 men, while ours is about 1/5 as many. I feel proud of Iowa. Thurs. 16. The election returns show a majority for the republicans in the County and state while the Township of Bloomington went Democratic. Last night I took supper at 2d Lt. Kranz’, It was a grand one. Returned home late last night. This evening Lt. J. Mayer asked for permission to be absent a few days, I told him he could not go this evening for Kranz and I were going up town and he should take command of the company, he got very wrathy at this, went over to headquarters and got excused by the Col. to be absent, I reported him immediately for disobedience of orders. I want obedience & I [bound?] to have it. Fri. 17. I staid in bed nearly all day, because I was very unwell. This camp is a mighty poor place for a sick man, and sickness is spreading very fast, the 24 has about 1/8 of its men sick. Our men are beginning to complain also. The 24. Reg. is making preparations to leave soon, they are anxious to get off. The 37. or Gray Beard regiment is going to take their places.
