Saving...
Fri. 7 I left Davenport on this morning’s train. Arrived in camp in good season, made out the roll, and amount due each man, in order to pay off the company. Had considerable trouble in getting a sufficient number of small bills. Sat. 8. Paid off most of the men, I find there are a few mistakes in the bills, some names of men omitted, who are entitled to subsistence money, these are not at all pleased. I will have to make out a new bill for these men. Sun. 9. Saw a great many of my friends today. I was officer of the day. It was splendid weather, we had crowds of visitors. The people and the soldiers seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Made the grand rounds tonight and had considerable sport with the Grey Beards, who are generally very ignorant. Last night I joined the Iowa Lodge of Free and accepted Masons. I am now a member of the most ancient and celebrated fraternity. I was lectured today. Mon. 10 I did not do much of any thing today. This evening I took the 2d degree of Masonry. Captain Keeler and Wells, did the same. I find that a great many soldiers of our regiment are masons. The weather is fine. Tues. 11 Again I visited the Lodge, where I was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason.
